Women and men choose dermal filler treatments for facial rejuvenation and enhancement without surgery. Popular uses for these treatments include:
Smoothing away facial folds, creases, and wrinkles
Adding or restoring volume to the cheeks, brows, and temples, and under the eyes
Filling out and defining the lips
While dermal fillers provide excellent improvements on their own, our surgeons also use them to enhance the results of facial plastic surgery procedures such as a facelift, brow lift, and eyelid surgery.
Which filler is right for me?

Dermal Fillers Surgeons
At UVA Plastic Surgery, our highly regarded surgeons offer expertise and personalized care for a rewarding patient experience.
One of the most popular dermal filler options, lip fillers use hyaluronic acid to temporarily enhance the size and shape of the lips. Lip filler can smooth vertical lipstick lines, enhance a Cupid’s bow, correct asymmetry, and create a plumper pout. These improvements can last 12 to 18 months, although patients can have it dissolved sooner if they want.
Lip fillers are especially beneficial for people with naturally thin lips or whose lips have lost volume and definition as they’ve aged. Those who want to look their best for a special occasion may also seek out lip fillers for a cosmetic boost.
What are filler treatments like?
Our surgeons perform these simple treatments right in our office. Treatment take approximately 15 minutes to an hour to complete. Using a short, fine needle several quick injections are made beneath the skin of the face or lips. Patients usually experience little to no discomfort because our fillers contain a numbing medication.
What can I expect during recovery?
Normal activities may be resumed immediately after treatment as no downtime is needed. We do recommend holding off on strenuous exercise for the remainder of the day of treatment.
How long do filler results last?
Improvements from filler treatments are immediate but temporary. The longevity of results depends on the specific filler used, area treated, and depth of injection. Some fillers last 6 to 12 months; others last as long as 2 years. Periodic maintenance treatments can keep your enhanced look indefinitely.
Dermal Fillers FAQ
How should I massage lip filler lumps?
If you notice lumps or unevenness after getting lip fillers, it’s important to follow your provider’s instructions. In some cases, they may advise gently massaging the area with circular motions to help distribute the filler evenly. Alternatively, they may recommend dissolving the filler.
Most lumps will resolve within a week or two after injection. If they persist, reach out to your injector to see what they advise. Avoid rubbing lumps sooner, which can cause the product to migrate and exacerbate swelling, pain, and bruising.
Can you eat after getting lip fillers?
Avoid eating or drinking for at least 1 to 2 hours to allow the filler to settle and minimize the risk of inadvertently disturbing the injected area. Wait until all of the numbness has worn off, and be careful not to wipe your mouth too much or too roughly.
What you eat and drink also matters. Hot food and beverages can cause the filler to expand (causing further swelling). Crunchy or sticky food may cause the filler to migrate or break down, while salty food can cause fluid retention and make swelling worse. Alcohol, too, can put you at a higher risk of bruising.
How long does tear trough filler last?
Tear trough fillers are often made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that adds volume and hydration. The duration of tear trough filler results can vary from person to person, but they typically last around 9 to 12 months. The type of filler used, your body’s metabolism, and your skincare routine can all influence how long the results last.
Which dermal filler lasts the longest?
Various dermal fillers are available, and their longevity varies based on factors like formulation, the area of injection, and individual metabolism. In general, thicker fillers tend to last longer than thinner ones, as do injections in less animated areas of the face. For example, some fillers used for cheek augmentation or chin enhancement may last up to 1 to 2 years.
What’s the difference between BOTOX and fillers?
BOTOX and dermal fillers are both popular cosmetic treatments, but they serve different purposes. BOTOX temporarily relaxes muscles and is used to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, such as crow’s feet and frown lines.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are substances injected under the skin to add volume, smooth lines, and enhance contours. They’re commonly used to address static wrinkles, like nasolabial folds, and to augment areas like the lips and cheeks.
Are dermal fillers safe?
When administered by trained and experienced medical professionals, dermal fillers are generally considered safe. They are often made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in the body, or other biocompatible materials. However, like any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects, such as bruising, swelling, infection, or allergic reactions.
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers can also be dissolved if there are any complications, unevenness, or changes in your aesthetic preferences.
